Background: Synopsis via YYH wiki

Personality: Kuwabara starts the series as the #2 Punk at Sarayashiki Junior High and comes in a pretty expected package for the character trope, a big brute wrapped in an oversized uniform and topped with a pompadour. He's got a gang, and he lives to pick (and lose) fights with Yusuke Urameshi! A big, dumb rival to the main character!

He doesn't actually full-on subvert this as the series progresses, but he does have more depth! This is first shown at Yusuke's wake, in which Kuwabara bursts in yelling and crying about how he has yet to best Yusuke in a fight. It's misdirected, for sure, but it's the first step in illustrating his tendency towards strong attachments and strong emotional expression.

It's also during this first story arc that his ironclad Code of Honor is revealed. When a teacher threatens to disallow his friend's part-time job, Kuwabara agrees to a series of terms in order to counter the threat. He's not allowed to be involved in fights and must pass a test at the end of the week, and so he's beaten up multiple times and put through the academic ringer… But he keeps his promise! Keeping promises is part of the code! Protecting others is part of the code! Etc.

Before too long, Kuwabara stumbles into an accidental partnership with Yusuke, who's now back from the dead and fights demons! While he resists at first, not wanting to be a part of any decidedly weird shit, he quickly becomes a loyal ally. Over the course of the series, the bond he forms with Yusuke is strong and absolute. This is observable enough for enemies to eventually use them against one another. Younger Toguro uses Kuwabara's (supposed) death to motivate some berserker power out of Yusuke, and Sensui uses Yusuke's (actual) death to motivate Kuwabara to pursue him into the demon world, destroying the barrier between worlds in the process.

For the most part, Kuwabara's also friendly with the rest of the characters within the series, showing that he's generally a guy who can hang despite being easily baited. Botan refers to him oh-so-cutely as "Kuwa-chan," and he can casually throw an arm around Kurama's shoulders without the fellow adolescent/ancient demon seemingly the least bit fussed about it.

The notable exception to this, of course, is Hiei. While Kuwabara does accept that Hiei is an essential teammate, he doesn't have to like it. To Kuwabara, who finds his foundation in relationships, in caring about people, and in high ideals, who fights to protect, Hiei's seemingly self-serving, loner tendencies drive him up a wall. He won't hesitate to bluntly tell Hiei his opinions of him, even while they function fine enough as teammates.

Kuwabara also believes in true freakin' love!! He falls for the ice maiden Yukina upon seeing a recording of her face and spends the rest of the series shamelessly gushing over her. The way he acts here is an extreme version and good summary of many of his overall traits. He's boisterous and chatty, prone to grand gestures and slight nervous bouts (that he does his best to overcome with more talking). He puts enough stock in his feelings for Yukina that her presence tends to reinvigorate him on a spiritual level, even helping him to recover from injuries and win battles.

Towards the end of the series, Kuwabara takes a pretty big, important turn. Being the only remaining human on the team, he's made to realize that he can't spend his life fighting demons without thinking about his future. While he initially resents and feels abandoned by his friends when they opt to travel and stay in the Demon World (which magnifies an inadequacy issue that all weaves in and out of the narrative), he's able to buckle down and start down his own, more self-realized path. He opts to try and get into a good high school, and… He makes it! Just barely, but still!

The series ends with Kuwabara as a somewhat popular high school student, though he's a little sour that said popularity was gained due to his predicting an earthquake. He feels as though he's treated as a novelty due to this, and he seems to feel a little out of place among humans, informed as he is about his experiences with the supernatural. Still, he works hard to continue to function, studying long hours to make sure he maintains the grades he needs to stay in school and to enter university. He's not exactly content with a more average life, but it's something that's important to maintain. Once it's revealed that the human and demon worlds are set to become more integrated… Well, he can start to feel better about being a more integrated kind of human being!

Abilities:
Human Psychic: Kuwabara is revealed early on to have a "high spiritual awareness," which basically amounts to him being a psychic. This, as it turns out, runs in his family. While it's initially presented as his being able to sense (and sometimes see) ghosts/spirits, as well as more easily host and communicate with them. Throughout the series, he also shows examples of foresight, telepathy, and communication/prediction through dreams. All of that said… Kuwabara's not a very good psychic, and he has little to no control over any of these abilities. While a very low-key version of these abilities seem to be a constant part of his subconscious, they largely seem to come and go as dictated by need.

Rei Ken (Spirit Sword): Kuwabara can manipulate his spiritual energy into a weapon, and he most often goes for a sword. This is a glow-y, orange light weapon… basically what is says on the label! It may be notable that other weapons are possible, as he's also formed things like throwing knives and javelins, but energy is always generated from his palms (as opposed to Yusuke's concentration in his fingertips) and takes on very similar shapes.

Jigen Tou (Dimension Sword): An advanced form of the above, a sword made of Kuwabara's spiritual energy that can cut through dimensional barriers. In the series, it manifests to allow Kuwabara to escape a pocket dimension before it is used to cut the barrier between the human and demon worlds. Near the end of the series, it is shown that it gives Kuwabara the ability to essentially teleport by traveling via cuts made. This ability is very difficult for Kuwabara to access, and he cannot readily do so without being under duress.

NOTE: Since it's got the potential to be a pretty game-break-y ability, I don't preemptively plan on having him access the Jigen Tou at all. The exception, and why I like to leave it as a possibility, is its potential use as a plotting device, which would be sparingly applied at most and involve seeking permissions, etc.
